No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
