RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
